Introduction to Life Coaching

What if you woke up tomorrow morning and, while you were sleeping, a miracle had occurred? What if, overnight, the problems that have been bothering you: problems with your job, financial worries, troubled relationships, and other personal and professional issues (we all have them) in your everyday life. What if everything was fixed? Take a few second and think about it...

  • Where would you be when you woke up?
  • How would you feel?
  • What would your life be like?
  • What would be the first thing you would do?

This is called "The Miracle Question" and it's often used to help persons, persons probably a lot like you, determine what they want in their lives to change, and to decide how they really want to live.

For some of us, we can get so mired in the day-to-day, so worn down by what’s in front of us that we lose sight of what we really want. When this happens, the chance of actually reaching a better (more fulfilling) life decreases from “very possible, and likely” to “fat chance.”

Setting Goals for Happiness, and Achieving Them

Does the miracle question, and your answers to the questions above, seem impossible? If so, you're not alone. In fact, many people feel this way when they ask themselves these types of questions. However, what we, the Life Coaches at Thrive Boston, have found is that when you begin to identify the core of specific problems in your life and start making even moderate steps in the right direction, change can be more within reach, and change can happen faster, than you ever thought possible.

Thrive Boston life coaches are experts at helping you identify what you want, setting goals for achieving what you want, and then walking with you as you labor to reach those goals. It sounds simple, and from 20,000 feet it is. Of course, when you get down into it, when you hit upon the roadblocks of change—emotional, social, financial, etc.—the road is clear, but it’s not always easy. That’s why every life coach at Thrive Boston is also a fully licensed mental health professional (Professional Counselor or Psychologist). We believe it takes this level of expertise and training to truly help clients reach their maximum potential.

Warning: Life Coach Seekers Be Careful

You might already know that a lot of people today are calling themselves a life coach, personal coach, relationship coach, success coach, or any number of variations on the term "coach." While there are many very good coaches in Boston and Cambridge, please be aware that the designation of “coach” alone means very little. There is no recognized professional licensure for life coaches. You need to be careful because this means that ANYONE can call himself or herself a life coach.

Finding a coach is not hard. However, finding the right professional coach; someone who can help you set and reach your personal goals, that is another matter altogether.

Thrive Boston Life Coaches help literally hundreds of individuals every year. In addition, our coaches are also fully licensed mental health professionals, many with Doctoral-level degrees, and have passed through the rigorous screening and hiring process of at Thrive Boston.

Life Coaching is Growth Focused

It is said that counseling can take a person from a point of pain, to a place of healing (say, from -5 to a neutral point of 0), and that life coaching brings persons from a place of neutral, to a place of life success and fulfillment (say, from 0 to +10)!

The truth is that our life experiences aren’t summarized well by a 0 to 10 scale. We can find success in one part of our lives, reaching between an 8 or 10, and be a 0 in another. One of the major challenges in life is finding a healthy balance in all areas of our lives at the same time. For example, learning how one can improve her career without neglecting another parts of her life—say, her marriage or physical health.

Below is a simple diagram for measuring life satisfaction. The inner ring for each section is "1", the outermost ring is "10." Where are you in each of these areas? Which sections are most important for you to improve?

If you’re not ranking all 10s, don’t worry. Few of us can keep each area a 10 for long. Part of the reason is that as soon as we reach a “10”, our perspective changes, and that 10 we just achieved immediately get downgraded to an 8. There is always something more to be done. Truth be told, part of the life coaching process is learning (and experiencing) this first hand.

The famous psychologist Erich Fromm once wrote, in talking about the potential for personal growth, that there is no limit to man’s potential for personal growth and achievement. There is always more to be done. Specifically, he penned the quote, "Man [and woman] always dies before he is fully born." This sounds negative but it is actually a very positive thought...we never reach our maximum potential, because we can always improve.
